Ranunculus Blossoms Made from Recycled Paper

This weekend I spent cleaning and organizing my office/studio. As I add more projects and tools, it seems to be an unending task. However, much of the mess ends up being piles of papers and catalogs to go through. That is my task for today. In order to make it a little more fun, I decided that I would try this neat project I found on T.Matthews blog. She commented that they look like ranunculus flowers, and that was my first thought when I saw them.

Instead of spending my time shredding and dumping the paper recycling basket today, I am going to cut swirls. Okay, it might take me a bit longer, but it will be so much more fun. =)

Recycled Metal Rake Wine Glass Rack by Etsy Junk Metal Artist, Dwayne Bulla

Etsy seller and Junk Metal Artist, Dwayne Bulla, has come up with this most creative idea for a wine glass rack--it's an old metal rake. He calls it "Wine by the Tine." This would make a great conversation piece!

Recycled Glass Outdoor Lighting Project

It has been raining here the past couple of days, and the snow is just about gone from our deck. Yes, it is still to cold to be sitting out on the deck in the evening, but the spring fever sparks are starting to ignite my thoughts.

Above is a neat project for outdoor lighting that I found. I think I am going to start saving my jars to make one. Baby food jars would work great, but my kids are beyond that stage. Maybe I will ask a friend or neighbor to save some.

You can find the directions for this project at:

Recycled Pop Bottle Lawn Sprinkler and Rethink® Hanger Gadget Adapter

About a month ago I ran across these neat gadgets that make pop bottles into hangers. Today I went back to find the bookmark I had made, and they had been removed from the site.

It seems that these nifty hanger adapters have been getting quite a bit of negative publicity, because people think they are too expensive and too bulky. If you loaded your closet with them, yes, they would take up quite a bit of space. But what I thought they would be great for is air-drying shirts and tops. At the cost of $6.99 each, I thought it would be worth the money to purchase one.

Unfortunately, they are no longer available in the U.S. according to their website, but they do have a Facebook page listed. Maybe if enough of us comment that we want one, they will make them available in the U.S. again.
Here is a link to their site:

In my search to find out where I might be able to buy one of those Rethink hanger gadgets, I ran across a blog with a post on how to make this fun lawn sprinkler from a used pop bottle.

Recyclable Aromatherapy Packaging

One of the suggestions I found when I was doing my linen closet cleaning project was to add a sachet in with the folded linens to scent them. Well I did not have any sachets, but the other day I ran across a simple way to make them. Then, I thought how neat it would be to scent some of my MEMORABLE MENTIONS packaging, so customers could use it as a sachet.

All you need is an essential oil of your choice, an absorbent cotton pad or ball, a sealable plastic bag, and piece paper. Simply add a few drops of essential oil to the cotton pad, place it in the sealable plastic bag along with the paper, and wait a couple days. When you take out the paper, it will have absorbed the scent of the essential oil.

You can see from the picture above that I decided to scent the cards I use for packaging my pendants. Customers have a choice of Lavender or a combination of Honeysuckle, Geranium, and Ylang Ylang. I also did a set with one of my favorite essential oil mixtures from Aveda® called Rainforest. (Don't worry if you are scent sensitive. I also have some that are unscented.)

Besides the linen closet, you can put the scented cards in with your lingerie, or even your kitchen towels.

This would also be a great way to recycle your greeting cards. Just cut out an image from the card and do the same as I did above with my business cards.

Reusing and Recycling Old Sheets and Towels

Now that I have sorted through the linen closet, I have stacks of old towels and sheets. The next task is what to do with them. I will give you some great ideas, but if you are like me, you will need to decide if you are REALLY going to accomplish some of these projects for reuse.

In more than one place I read that you should use the 6 month rule to help you decide. If you will not use them within the next 6 months, get rid of them. Maybe someone else will have use for them or have the time to make them into something reusable. Another thing I read is that if you really cannot decide, put them in a box dated 6 months from now. If you have not used those items within the next 6 months, they need to go. (The exception would be seasonal/holiday items.) If you are still undecided, asking yourself if the item could be replaced for under $20 would be another indicator of its proper place. Answering "yes" would be a sign that it needs to go in the donation pile.

There are basically three options when sorting through the pile--save, throw, donate.

You might want to have a couple of bags ready for the items to donate. Label the bags with their destination and put them immediately in the car or by the front door. The intent is not to stash them somewhere else.

Remember, that all those items in the "save" pile will need new homes. (The option of moving something to the donate pile is always open.) If you are saving one of those old sheets to cover the garden on a frosty night like I am, it should probably be put in the garage or shed with all the rest of your gardening supplies. Also, if you only need two sheets, only save two of them. Some of those saved items can also be used for multiple purposes on the list I will give you. In that case, you might just want to designate a specific area for old sheets or old towels. That way, you will know where to find them when you need them.

With that, here are a some suggested ways to reuse and recycle old linens:

• Use them for drop cloths for painting projects
• Let children drape them over chairs to make tents or forts
• Cut them into thin strips and use them to knit or crochet
• Crochet them into rag rugs
• Turn them into linen napkins or tablecloths
• Make kitchen curtains
• Use to slip cover chairs
• Cut them up and use them to make and stuff throw pillows
• Use them for quilt backing
• Make a laundry bag
• Make drawstring gift bags
• Use it to make gift wrap
• Donate them to homeless shelters
• Take them to the beach and use for picnics
• Use for picnic or camping tablecloth
• Cover fruit trees and/or flowers to protect from frost
• Tear them into strips and use them to tie your tomato plants to stakes
• Cut them up and use them for dusting
• Knot them and make a dog toy
• Use it for dog bedding
• Donate them to animal shelters
